Hair Extension At-Home Care
Investing in hair extensions is more than just a beauty upgrade—it’s a commitment. Proper at-home care is key to protecting your investment and keeping your hair looking flawless between salon visits.
As a stylist, I always say: the better you care for your extensions, the longer they last—and the better they look. So let’s dive into why aftercare matters and how to do it right.
Why Extension Aftercare Is So Important:
Protect Your Investment: Quality extensions aren’t cheap. Taking a few simple steps at home will extend their lifespan and save you money in the long run.
Prevent Damage: Improper care can lead to tangling, matting, and even damage to your natural hair. Following a good routine helps avoid breakage and unnecessary stress to your scalp.
Maintain a Natural Look & Feel Confident Every Day: Well maintained extensions blend seamlessly with your natural hair. Frizz, dryness, or buildup can make even the best extensions look less than their best. Clean, smooth, shiny extensions = an instant confidence boost.
How to Properly Care for Your Extensions at Home:
Brush Gently, and Often
Use an extension-friendly brush or wide-tooth comb and always start from the bottom, working your way up. Brush 2-3 times a day to prevent tangling—especially at the nape and near the wefts.
Wash With Care
Use sulfate-free, extension-safe shampoos and conditioners. Focus shampoo on your scalp and avoid scrubbing aggressively. When conditioning, keep it mid-shaft to ends—conditioner on the root can cause slippage.
Dry Thoroughly
It is best to dry the hair completely; however, if time doesn’t allow, always dry the root before air drying the rest. Sleeping with wet hair can lead to matting or even mildew. Use a heat protectant before styling and keep heat tools at a moderate temperature.
Sleep Smart
Never sleep with wet hair. Before bed, gently brush your hair and braid it or tie it in a loose ponytail to prevent tangling overnight. Consider using a silk pillowcase or bonnet to reduce friction.
Avoid Heavy Products
Oils, deep conditioners, or masks are great—just not near your roots. Stick to lightweight leave-ins and serums applied to your mid-lengths and ends.
Schedule Regular Maintenance
Professional move-ups or maintenance appointments are crucial to keeping your extensions safe and your natural hair healthy. Don’t skip them!
Hair Extensions are meant to make your life easier and your hair more fabulous—but like anything worth having, they require a little love. Treat them well, follow these simple care tips, and they’ll reward you with months of beautiful, effortless hair.
